Black & Veatch joins a consortium of industry leaders led by Two Degrees Adapt to complete an innovative research project aimed at finding and evaluating nature-based solutions for the Mississippi River Corridor. The study will support the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative (MRCTI), a coalition of 100 mayors from communities along the Mississippi River that are working together to increase resilience, sustainability, and prosperity. MRCTI is working to protect and restore the Mississippi River as a natural system that supports culture, economies, and the river’s unique ecosystem and wildlife.
“We are proud to be supporting Two Degrees Adapt for the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative study to better understand the benefits of nature-based solutions along the Mississippi River corridor,” said Laura Adams, Green Infrastructure Practice Lead at Black & Veatch.
The project team will study modeling, existing grey infrastructure and the economic impacts of flooding for selected locations and events. They will also identify locations for wetland restoration and estimate the flood mitigation potential, establish return on investment and develop multi-stakeholder business models.
“The vision is to create a cohort of businesses, adaptation experts, engineering firms, financiers and local governments to create a strong foundation for investments in green infrastructure for this region,” said Adams.
“Black & Veatch has a longstanding commitment to drive and develop solutions that address sustainability and climate resilience,” said Lisa Fewins, Managing Director of Black & Veatch’s Environmental business.
