August 07, 2007 at 16:05 PM EDT
Airgas, Inc. (NYSE:ARG) today presented its seventh annual Scott Melman Award to Dan Moriarty, director of external reporting, for his many contributions through the years.
The annual award is named for Scott M. Melman, former chief financial officer of Airgas, Inc., who died in 2001. According to the award’s inscription, it honors “Airgas employees who exhibit the qualities we remember in Scott M. Melman: Professionalism, perseverance, enthusiasm, energy, a sense of honor, and the courage to speak up and make a difference.”
“Dan is a high-impact player – though often behind the scenes – who is extremely competent, dedicated, resourceful, and never quits till the task at hand is accomplished,” said Bob McLaughlin, senior vice president and chief financial officer, in nominating Moriarty.
“Dan has been involved in nearly 100 acquisitions small and large, including our recent acquisitions of the Linde’s bulk and packaged gas businesses,” added Airgas Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Peter McCausland. “No matter the accounting issue, Dan drills down, does the research, and arrives at the answer so we can properly record these complex transactions.”
McCausland also noted that Airgas colleagues and external accounting partners cite Moriarty’s knowledge and analysis as well as his enthusiasm for the profession. “It is quite obvious that he really knows and loves accounting. In the midst of a quarter-end or year-end rush, Dan is never without a smile.”
Moriarty first joined Airgas in 1997 in the Internal Audit department, and a year later was named director of external reporting, a role he has held for the past nine years. Prior to joining Airgas, Moriarty had spent a dozen years in auditing and accounting roles with Deloitte & Touche, General Public Utilities Service Corporation, and Parente, Randolph, Orlando, Carey & Associates. A graduate of Lehigh University with a bachelor’s in accounting, he is a Certified Public Accountant. He resides in Allentown, PA.
