Buy Box Experts’ Amazon Specialists Tell Retailers that Stakes are High for Managing Record-high Product Returns

Amazon consulting firm says that online sellers’ success could rise or fall based on how they handle a windfall of returns from Q4 2020.

Buy Box Experts, which helps retailers sell more on Amazon, is predicting a 10-25% increase in returns from Q4 of 2020 as compared to Q4 of 2019. In light of this uptick, they are warning sellers to streamline their return management process or risk losing significant profits and alienating customers.

Buy Box Experts Partner James Thomson said that the uptick in returned merchandise will test sellers’ return management processes, and those who falter risk bleeding out profits and losing current and future customers. “Companies need to be doing everything that they can to streamline and automate their return processes so that they can get returned items up for resell when possible and also ensure that customers are getting refunds or exchanges fast so their feedback and ratings are positive,” said Thomson.

Thomson, who served as the business head of Amazon Services as well as the first Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) account manager, said that companies must fine-tune systems for:

  • Grading and testing returned inventory
  • Tracking reasons for returns for quality improvement analysis
  • Determining which items can be resold vs. disposed of
  • Responding to customer concerns/complaints

According to eMarketer, ecommerce sales for 2020 are forecast to have increased by 32%, and DigitalCommerce360 said that Amazon’s sales represent nearly one-third of 2020’s ecommerce growth. That growth, combined with the fact that returns tend to be higher with ecommerce because people can’t physically examine merchandise, has saddled Amazon sellers with a mass of returns to grapple with in 2021.
