One Small Step for Man, One Giant Leap for Ending Heart Disease

The usual blue seascape off of the Ocean City Boardwalk was a mass of red shirts and hats on Saturday, May 19 when more than 2,400 people joined the annual American Heart Association Heart Walk for Southern New Jersey. Led by New Jersey American Water’s Senior Director of Business Development David Marino, dozens of company employees and family members helped raise money for heart disease research.
Marino was appointed to the AHA Heart Walk Executive Cabinet this year and was asked to help raise over $310,000 in donations for the association. As a cabinet member, Marino was tasked with creating a fun recruitment campaign within the own company, personally raising $1,000 or more, and recruiting a minimum of two or three new companies to participate in the Heart Walk.
"I am proud of all the New Jersey American Water employees that participated in the American Heart Association's Spring 2012 Heart Walk this past weekend in Ocean City, NJ,” said David Marino. “The American Heart Association does some remarkable work so supporting such an organization and helping to raise funds to advance their research is not difficult. Everyone you speak to has a relative or knows a friend that has benefited from the AHA advancements in coronary and stroke treatment.”
The American Heart Association raised over $283,000 from just the Southern New Jersey Walk. All of the money raised during the walk will go towards research for heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. Heart disease and stroke are the nation’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers, respectively, according to the American Heart Association’s website.
